1988 Vogue III 35' Motorhome
1988 Vogue III Custom Coach 35' Diesel Motorhome built on a Crown Bus Chassis.
This BEAUTIFUL CUSTOM MOTORHOME was originally priced at $199,000 and top-of-the-line
state-of-the-art coach for it's time. It was quality built on a Crown Bus Chassis
using Rockwell International running gear, a Ridewell Air Suspension, and Aloca
wheels. The Detroit Diesel engine and 4 speed automatic Allison transmission provide
reliable power that is easy to maintain with an electric over air Stone Bennet
shifter it eliminates the possible failure of computerized systems used in later
model coaches. Cruise control also still works great. The dash air conditioner has
a new compressor, high pressure switch, and drier and it was working great all
last summer but slowly leaked the 10 cans of R134 due to the older long A/C lines.
On hot days we keep the 15000 BTU Coleman roof A/C and rear cabin vented window air
on using the Onan DKD 7.5kw diesel generator that burns less than 0.5 gal per hour.
On cold days there is a Suburban propane furnace as well as the front "dash" and
rear engine heaters that also work.
There is a 5 gallon hot water heater that is
both propane and 120V AC as well as the newer Dometic fridge and freezer. A four
burner propane stove with convection oven microwave combination all works great
for cooking any meal and there is loads of storage in the cabinets all along
the overheads. Some of the fluorescent lights have failed and either need bulbs
or ballasts, I have replaced some with LED's, and have extra LEDs that will go
with the coach. I have installed ~800 watts of solar panels on top of the roof
and wired them into a Morningstar charge controller to the house battery an 8D
size 12V AGM type. The house battery and system also has a 70AMP 12V charger
(from 120V AC). There are also 2 8D engine start batteries and a trickle charger
for long term charge maintenance. Solenoids controlled by dash switches allow
boosting the battery banks together for starting or viewing state of charge.
There are three locations for controlling the generator including the system
monitor which includes tank level sensors for the 100 gallon fresh water, 40
gallon gray, 40 gallon black, and 60 gallon propane tanks. The main fuel tank
holds 100 gallons but only the first 7/8 is usable by the generator to prevent
the generator from stranding you. The on-demand water pump is 12V and there is a nice stand-up shower
with newer delta fixture, sink, and RV flushing toilet. This coach was designed
with an insulated and heated compartment for the tanks and water system to
prevent freezing, but the furnace has to be kept on for it to work. The awning
is in acceptable shape, but may need to be replaced in a few years. The electric
step works, but is better if you help it extend fully when you park for long
periods. We have put over 20,000 miles on this coach since we have owned it
with no real issues. I would recommend it to someone who is mechanically inclined
as it will require occasional maintenance and repairs, but overall it is very
reliable mechanically and should be reasonable cost to maintain due to the
common truck parts used. I have found that truck mechanics love this thing
and you will have good luck going to them rather than an RV service center.
The engine bay is readily accessible and it is simple 1980's technology using
HEAVY DUTY hardware.
