1990 Blue Bird Wanderlodge SP36 Motorhome
You are looking at one of the rarest of Blue Bird Wanderlodges, parked under our RV port and in excellent condition
with a low 85K miles. There were supposedly only 72 SP36's (single rear axle pusher 36 foot) built from 89-91, and
even fewer 1990 Silver Anniversary Editions, which was the last year of the traditional anodized aluminum trim and
serious bumpers. This motorcoach is built like a fortress out of heavy galvanized steel that will last multiple
generations, and should still be on the road over 50 years from now with proper care (depending on what roads
will look like then). Nobody ever built a bus type motorhome quite like this (not Newell or Prevost) and nobody
will ever duplicate it again. With an original cost of over $305,000, there was no expense spared in the manufacture
of this custom built machine, and the primary reason they are holding their value today and tomorrow. Newer
motorhomes can depreciate more by driving off the lot than the entire cost of this one. This particular model is
referred to as the "Hot Rod" of Blue Birds due to its shorter size, maneuverability, and towing capability. The
turbocharged Caterpillar 3208 (10.4 liter/7-8 mpg) rear mounted diesel provides a powerful ride and quiet cabin
that is smoothed out by an air suspension that glides over the road. This coach has a $3,000 set of tires with
less than 2K miles, is mechanically serviced and ready to embark anywhere in the country with a 200 gallon fuel
capacity. . .or it can serve as a high quality mobile homestead for extended living with
lots of internal and external storage.
An 8KW Onan/Kubota diesel generator with inverter can power everything
while away from utility services, with 3 air conditioners (including the cold dash AC) to keep you cool, and
no less than 11 heat sources to keep you warm. Although the interior colors may be a bit dated, the leather
seating, oak trim and cabinetry exhibit a level of quality and craftsmanship from days gone by.
The cockpit
and instrument panel even includes an aircraft altimeter, would make a 747 pilot feel at home, and provides
the driver with total awareness and control over the coach's functions. There is even a small control panel
over the queen sized bed in the rear bedroom. This 'Bird has nearly every imaginable RV amenity for its time
(no slide outs back then or satellite systems. . .although I have one available), and includes several unique
features such as Imron aircraft exterior paint, shielded awnings all around, aluminum decking with railings
to party on the roof (it's that strong NASCAR fans), hydraulic leveling, dual remote spotlights, motorized
curtains, a powerful attic fan, a digital calliope, two flat panel TV/DVD players, and two digital AM/FM/CD radios.
