1982 Airstream Classic Motorhome - Funeral Coach

History
This motorhome was ordered from Airstream in 1982 as a custom build for a funeral home in California. It was ordered with the rear section of a Funeral Coach and from there forward, it is configured as a regular motorhome with bathroom/toilet, shower, kitchen, fridge, cooktop, microwave oven, fold down couch, and dinette
According to Airstream (Blue Beret May 2011), there were only 32 of the Funeral Coaches built between 1981 and 1988. The funeral home is still in operation and staff members recall using the motorhome to transport caskets and family members.
The motorhome passed through various owners till I purchased it in June 2007 and have been improving and using it since then. Some time before I acquired it, the rear area was converted to accommodate an East-West queen bed.

Motorhome Body
The exterior is in very good condition with the original gold paint from the factory on the lower part of the body with an aluminum upper half. The woodtrim beltline has faded somewhat over almost 30 years, and is coming off a few places.
- The rooftop air conditioners were installed in 2009 and are Carrier Air V 15,000BTU with heat strips.
- The original vents were replaced in 2011 with two Fantastic Vent 6000rbta’s with Automatic motor 0pen/close dome, Rain Sensor, thermostat, 3speeds.
- Zip Dee awning
- There is a spare tire carrier and spare tire and wheel mounted on the rear of the motorhome
- The entry door is extra wide and there is one of the handicap assist rails still present
- Electric steps
- The bumpers and banana wraps are in good condition.
- The remote control roof-mounted spotlight is operational with high beam working. Low beam is not operational and could be remedied with a new bulb.
- There is a variety of locking storage lockers underneath the coach for slinky, fresh water hoses, batteries, etc.
- Atwood 6 gallon gas water with electronic ignition (2008)
- Suburban NT-30SP gas furnace (2008)
- Onan 6500 gas generator with remote start. Will run both air conditioners
- Fresh water tank
- Black water tank
- Grey water tank
- LP gas tank
- 1 chassis starting battery, and 1 house deep cycle battery. There is room for a second house battery to be added to extend boondocking capacity

Motorhome Chassis
The chassis is the venerable Chevrolet P-30 chassis with a 454 cu in Big Block Chevy V8 and a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. Parts for the drivetrain are available from the local parts stores or online using 1982 Chevy P30 Van for the selection. Airstream ordered the chassis with 4-wheel disc brakes.
- Dash air conditioning and heating work well
- Hedman Headers
- Bilstein dampers have been installed front and rear
- Supersteer higher rated front springs (eliminates front air bags and their maintenance)
- Roadmaster upgraded front anti-roll bar and rear roll bar suspension bushings
- Hornblasters Shocker S4 XL Train Horns (Personally, I think this is the best modification I have made)
- 6 gallon air tank for rear auto-leveling rear suspension and train horns
- Viair 444C constant duty air compressor (2010)
- Tires have good tread with no sidewall cracks. Fronts are Michelin XZE 225/70-19.5’s. Rears are Continental General LMT-400’s 225/70-19.5
- Electric leveling jacks
- Instrumentation includes speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, water temperature, oil pressure, volt meter, vacuum gauge, and transmission temperature.

Interior
Standard features include:
- East-West Queen bed in rear
- Fold down couch that makes into a bed
- Dinette that folds down into another bed
- Dual sink with new single handle faucet
- Drinking water filter
- Water pump for fresh water tank
- Two way (LP Gas/120 V) 2-door Dometic refrigerator
- Sharp Microwave/Convection oven
- 4-burner gas cook top with pilot light for automatic lighting
- Range hood exhaust fan
- Plenty of storage space for cookware, cutlery, and food.
- Cedar lined hanging closet with two drawers
- Bathroom/toilet
- Separate stand up shower
- Shower
- Airstream Command Center to monitor levels in the tanks and battery condition as well as the remote start for the Onan generator.
Upgrades have been added to the interior to include
- 6-way power, heated, leather Flexsteel Drivers Seat
- Leather Flexsteel passenger seat
- 15” touchscreen PC with support for GPS, Music, and Internet Browser. Additional devices can be added such as backup cameras.
- Pioneer AM/FM Radio and CD with 4x25W amplifiers. Supports iPod and other USB connections as well as an Aux input
- 12” subwoofer with separate amplifier

Funeral Coach Features
The rear section had the large passenger door side-opening that was typical of the Family Funeral Coach, but the driver’s side door that opened vertically was not installed. The casket was placed in the rear section through the side of the motorhome and was carried across the coach. The rear of the motorhome opens clamshell style with a door that folds down and a window that opens upwards. The intention was for the flower arrangements to be placed in this area and displayed or carried along with the casket and the family members.
The VIN plate identifies the origin of the motorhome as a Funeral Coach.
